HEALTH ALERT: Prevent cross-infection by choosing the perfectly hygienic nail salon and building your own nail kit.

Hello Girls,

Here is a blog post about the many reasons why you have to take your own personal nail kit when you go to the hair salon and why you should be very picky and cautious when choosing a clean, sanitised and a hygienic one.

There are many nail salons around every corner and stopping by anyone at any time of day for the perfect pedicure and manicure has never been this easy. However, when you come to choose a good nail salon you have to look for certain criteria:

  • Make sure that the whole atmosphere is very clean
  • Make sure that the manicurist washes her hands between clients
  • Make sure that the tub you soak your feet in comes with a disinfectant ball as this can be a harbour for bacteria
  • Make sure that the towel you place your hands on is not stained and is very clean
  • If you don't have your own nail kit, make sure that all the equipment the salon uses is sanitised.
  • Any tool that the manicurist uses has to come out of a sanitised bag and opened in front of you.
  • If you are hurt or injured or had any recent infection please make sure that you tell your manicurist in advance so that she takes the necessary precautions.
The main reason why I am stressing about this point is that Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C-serious bloodhorne viral infections that affect the liver- are being transmitted in some nail salons and barbershops through cuts caused by contaminated instruments such as scissors, clippers and razors. So please be careful!

I would highly recommend that you build your own personal nail kit and take it with you every time you go to the salon. Your Nail Kit should include:
  • Toe separators

  • Cuticle pusher and remover

  • Clipper

  • Scissors

  • Nail File

  • Nail Buffer

  • Ankle Buffer

  • Orangewood stick

  • Toe and hands nail brush

  • A mini hand towel

  • A travel-friendly pouch to carry all these items

Having your own personal nail kit, does not mean you should not keep them extra clean and sanitised as well. Here is how to do it after every salon visit:
  • Get a small bowl of water fill it with shampoo and warm water and give your equipment a good wash.
  • Remove the soap water and add on the kit some clean hot water with a drop or two of Dettol liquid.
  • Keep them in the solution for 20 minutes.
  • Rinse them well, dry them off and put them all in a ZIPLOCK plastic bag.
  • Place the bag in your pouch for your next salon visit.
P.S.
It is also advisable to carry your own nail polishes as well. However, if you find a colour that is extra special in your nail salon that you can't resist go ahead and apply it!

Please keep all our women and girls aware. Beauty does come at a cost but the cost should never be our lives.
